Caps stunned by Bulldogs in third period

Cowichan loses grip on lead for second night in a row

For the second night in a row, the Cowichan Valley Capitals coughed up a third-period lead and went down to defeat.

The Caps took a 4-2 edge into the final frame of Sunday night’s road game against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, but gave up three uanswered goals, including two on the powerplay, to lose 5-4. At home on Saturday, the Caps led the Powell River Kings 3-2 after 40 minutes, only to end up on the losing side of a 4-3 finaly tally.

Luc Wilson opened the scoring for the Caps on Sunday with his eighth goal of the season on the powerplay. The Bulldogs replied soon after, but the Caps got goals from David Melaragni and Adam Conquest in the last two and a half minutes of the first to take a 3-1 lead into intermission. The teams swapped goals in the second, Preston Brodziak scoring for Cowichan, before Alberni took over the scoreboard in the third.

The Caps were outshot 29-25. Jack Grant made 20 saves in the Cowichan net, while Chemainus product John Hawthorne got the win with 25 saves in Alberni’s end.

Cowichan will hope to get 2019 off to a better start when they play host to the Nanaimo Clippers on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
