Buckskin Tournament returns to Cowichan soccer fields

Cowichan places 2nd in women’s tournament, Quw’utsun out in 2nd round on men’s side

The Cowichan Buckskin Soccer Tournament returned on the Mother’s Day weekend with a full slate of 28 First Nations teams.

The Thorne family has been running the tournament for more than 50 years, welcoming 16 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams from across Vancouver Island and the Mainland every year.

The men’s tournament was won by Xwelmexw FC, who beat the Kingcome Wolves 3-2 in overtime in the final. Third place went to Saanich United. Quw’utsun FC was eliminated in the second round after a shootout loss to Musqueam. Quw’utsun opened the tournament by beating Gwayasdums in the first round.

Cowichan reached the final of the women’s tournament, where they lost 3-1 to Skwxwu7mesh Nch’u7mut. The Alert Bay Thunderettes took third place.
