Make it eight straight and seven shutouts for goalie Darian Achurch and the Cowichan 49ers.

Starting the second half of their season, the 49ers moved to 8-0 after a 4-0 win over the Fernwood Dragons.

Team scoring leader Neall Rowlings scored his seventh of the campaign just three minutes into the contest despite early heavy pressure from Fernwood. The pressure kept coming but Cowichan didn’t buckle.

“Fernwood came to play and were a much different team this time around,” said team spokesperson Andrew Taft.

The 49ers added their second of the game, at the 49th minute after an 18 yard, low strike off the foot of Tyler Hughes found the mark.

At 2-0, the 49ers depth was on display as fresh legs smothered the Fernwood Squad.

“Our depth has been our strength all season. Despite a few key injuries, 21 guys showed up to play and everyone contributed key minutes to this win,” Taft said.

Man of the match and chain winner, Yuta Yamato scored two consecutive “long-range beauties,” according to Taft, to make it 4-0 for the 49ers.

Next up, a solid Prospect Lake squad on their home turf in Victoria.

In other Masters action, the Cowichan Steelheads fell 2-0 to Vic West 2-0 on home turf Nov. 5. Up next the Steelheads host UVic Alumni Nov. 12 at 8 p.m. in what should be a tough battle for the home side.

Cowichan Divs 1 and 3 play to draws

Div. 1 Cowichan Axis FC goalie Daniel Young-Mercer earned a shutout Nov. 6 when his team faced off against Powell River Villa at the Sherman Road turf. The only problem is, Powell River’s goalie did, too. The teams battled to a 0-0 tie.

Div. 3 Cowichan Oak played to a 2-2 draw with JDF Kings Nov. 4 at the Sherman Road turf.

Alexander Smith potted both goals for the home side in the 44th and 63rd minutes, bringing his team-leading goal tally to five on the season.
