Will you do just one more thing to combat climate change?
To the editor and to all the friends I know and to the friends I’ve yet to meet, I have a birthday wish. Will you consider doing just one more thing that you are not already doing to reduce climate change?
I turned half a century just after Christmas. In response to birthday wishes and kind questions about what I want as a gift at this “momentous” age (insert “over the hill” joke here) I’ve started asking everyone to do just one more thing that they aren’t already doing to reduce climate change. I’m writing you to spread this birthday wish a little farther.
Hope can inspire us all to offer this present at a different gathering of our choosing. Together we can each take small steps every day to reduce our environmental impact.
Truthfully, I strongly urge and expect all levels of government to take some really really big steps really, really soon. Yes, now! The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimated climate catastrophe in 12 years if we don’t make changes. (Twelve years, goodness, I have socks older than that!) Twelve years — that’s 2030! I know we can make a difference. Small changes do add up to big changes.
Happy New Year. May 2019 be peaceful with hundreds of thousands of climate change wishes spreading their wings and taking flight. Each of us contributing in our own way.
