We need to remember our heroes now more than ever

During these times of the global pandemic, the Black Live Matters movement, economic and employment fears, on and on, where we need, but struggle to find any good in the world today, as we look for things that give us hope, we need not forget or look any further than our greatest Canadian hero, Terry Stanley Fox.

On July 28 Terry would have turned 62 years old. I would like to list the achievements that Terry was able to accomplish during his shortened life of 22 years but it would take pages. Even though Terry has been gone for 40 years his efforts to find a cure for cancer are as strong today as they were when he began his Marathon of Hope in April of 1980. Over $750 million has been raised in his name, millions of participants in over 60 countries and is now the world’s largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research, wow.

So in these uncertain times where we worry about our families, our future, ourselves, we as Canadians can all be so proud of the fact this country gave us arguably the greatest hero to walk the earth. He gave us hope.

This Sept. 20 will be the Terry Fox Run’s 40th anniversary. With social distancing protocols and other safe measures in place the run and all of its fundraising will be done virtually this year. The organization has termed this year’s event “Your Run, Your Way”. To be done individually or as a family unit the run will continue regardless of the pandemic, only responsibly as Terry would have wanted it.

You can find all information required at https://terryfox.org/ and register online to the Duncan run at http://www.terryfox.ca/terryfoxrun/Duncan

Please find some time on Sept. 20 to remember Terry, to participate in his vision and help raise awareness and research funding by donating to his journey, his Marathon of Hope.

Stay Safe!
