Waterways have more value than as freighter anchorages
Your recent sharing of a letter to Alistair MacGregor, MP, from Michael Smith needs a response in my humble opinion.
Michael, you speak for other people within your ‘many of us’ who ‘feel’, regarding what you say folks are good with, that locally anchored freighters (many awaiting unload in the Port of Vancouver) are enhancing Canada’s image as a trading nation and pleasing to see in our waters. You further mention getting the fruits of our labours to distant markets and that being a large part of our dependent prosperity.
Do you understand the implications of these sustained anchorages? Do you value the ecology and diversity of aquatic species? Do you value it here? Your letter suggests not. To challenge the Member of Parliament is fine, yet you are taking his valuable time to respond to your letter, also on behalf of unnamed people, when he is doing exactly as his constituents are asking of him.
There’s a colossal lack of relationship between Canada’s trading nation image and protecting our waterways from toxic contamination/pollution from huge ships that sustain lengthy anchorages in the Salish Sea, our vulnerable, food sourcing, life-giving ocean.
