The war on Christmas
The recent suggestion by Meredith Shaw, one of the hosts of the The Social, CTV’s sadly second rate copy of America’s The View, that a Christmas Parade be renamed “Winter Parade” shows just how far we have strayed from common sense, reality and our historic traditions. Negative reaction to her liberal progressive extremism was immediate, as it should have been.
But we don’t have to look that far to find our own Cowichan Valley anti Christmas feeling and PC bigotry. It’s Christmas time, and we should be able to happily celebrate it without having to worry about the liberal progressive zealots trying to crush our love of the Christmas season. Banners around Duncan celebrating “Big Merry,” grocery stores advertising “Be Merry, Eat Happy” or Starbucks celebrating “Merry Coffee” are laughably ridiculous attempts to crush Christmas or eliminate it for their own uber secularist aims.
It’s not “Merry Time” folks. It’s Christmas time. We don’t celebrate winter. That’s a season. Everyone understands what’s going on here. The war on Christmas continues unabated, despite people’s anger about it, and it’s time for all of us who treasure Christmas to stand up for it. What is most reprehensible about this is the utter arrogance of the extremist PC types in thinking that they can just wave their magic wand and eliminate our traditions and history.
This year, as always, I will only be sending Christmas cards that say “Merry Christmas.” I will only be saying “Merry Christmas” to people, and I will celebrate Christmas in the traditional way as we have here in Canada for centuries. “Merry Time” is a false construct and a pathetic attempt to take from us what is most valuable, a trend that has penetrated every aspect of our society.
Now is the time to resist that trend, and in that spirit I want to thank the Citizen for having graciously printed so many of my letters in the past year, and I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in keeping with the season.
