Self-serve checkouts the fault of raising minimum wage

Once again I am disappointed reading another letter from C. Hunt who has made comments shooting off from the hip with no research done on the topic.

C. Hunt says the reason there are more self serve checkouts is so that the retailers can make better profits. How absurd! Why? The reason why there are more self service checkouts is because of B.C. Premier John Horgan, who knows nothing about how a business operates, goes ahead and raises the minimum wage to $13.85 per. Add 35 per cent employee benefits paid for by the employer, the hourly rate is now $18.70 per hour. What is a business supposed to do?

They do not hire any new staff unless someone quits, cut back on hours of work, and send some staff to the unemployment office. This is the only option they have, so that they do not have to increase their pricing to customers like C. Hunt.

If C. Hunt was the owner of a franchise operation, he or she would do the same when it came to staffing. A franchisee has to absorb the John Horgan pay raise out of their bottom line profit. Why? Franchise owners are not allowed to increase their menu pricing. Menu pricing is controlled by the corporation.

Once again, facts and reality must prevail in letters to editor, instead of propaganda which seems to be the norm these days. Unbelievable!
