Safe injection site on York could improve area

A lot of parents and residents are very upset about the plan to set up a safe injection site on York Street, as it’s so close to several schools. Not surprising. They would probably be relieved if it were moved somewhere else, say, the industrial park — where there are no addicts or homeless people to be found.

I suspect that it’s actually the crowd of homeless people on the sidewalks that they object to, as the school children see them there and will have to walk past them every day. But the homeless have been there for many months! Doubtless some of them are addicts. I would think it would be more alarming for them to be shooting up in plain view, rather than in a specified indoor location. Perhaps the children will even see overdosing and dying right there on the street! That’s what our children could be exposed to without a safe injection site on York Street.

What we really need to do is to get the homeless off the streets altogether. Not only a safe injection site, but an indoor venue where they can socialize and hang out while warm, dry and physically distanced. There’s no physical distancing where they’re all crowded on the sidewalk!
