People offended by Merry Christmas? Tough
I have just attended a winter concert and am saddened that the word Christmas was omitted from this occasion.
When asked why, I was told that the word Christmas is looked upon as offensive by those who are not Christians. Who sets this policy? Schoo boards? Teachers? Does not our national anthem include the line, “God keep our land/glorious and free…?” Get real people! Could children also be taught the words to our royal national anthem God Save the Queen?
I’m sure that almost all newcomers living in this country do not object to Christmas and that everyone welcomes a paid holiday. (Christmas is a statutory holiday in every province in Canada — time and ahalf if you work it and another day of with pay.) Businesses selling Xmas trees, decorations, stockings, gifts and so much other merchandise are happy for the opportunity this occasion provides. However, these businesses don’t wish to “offend” customers by wishing them a Merry Christmas or by playing Christmas carols.
Canada is a free country guaranteeing tolerance to all religious groups and that should include Christians. If people are offended by me saying Merry Christmas — tough!
