Park suggestions

Dear Mayor Staples and council:

I applaud the city for its forward-thinking tree-protection bylaw; one which North Cowichan sadly does not yet have, and which the CVRD apparently cannot have due to needed tree-protection wording in B.C.’s Local Government Act.

I now humbly suggest the city buy or negotiate a green donation from Island Savings for its lawned, vacant lot beside its main office building on Canada Avenue. That would sure be a fine addition — and set an example of other councils — to the continued and most welcome greening of our fair city.

Perhaps that pocket park could be named after Duncan’s late, great master painter E.J. Hughes, or another of our many notables.

I also recommend council initiate a bylaw mandating native-species trees in parking lots to allow greenery and shade during hot summer months. This would further entice visitors to our busy core, and keep shoppers and vehicles cool.
