Mental health care in Cowichan deplorable

There are some words in the English language that are very descriptive and powerful but we seldom have an opportunity to use them. One such word is “deplorable”.

The state of mental health care in the Cowichan Valley is deplorable.

We have people drawing handsome salaries as they sit around wringing hands, tugging forelocks and obsessing about symptoms, while refusing to acknowledge and deal effectively with the core problem - mental illness and deficiency in its various manifestations. They should feel ashamed about their failure to provide the treatment and care that those afflicted so desperately need.

And please don’t try to blame your failure on the Mental Health Act or lack of funding from the Provincial government. It’s part of your job to ensure that the law and funding are adequate to care for those in need.
