Mayor owes town planner an apology

In response to the news story: “Lake Cowichan mayor Peters chastised at council for apparent conflict of interest”.

I must agree with Mr. Ridley, there is a line called conflict of interest and it is obvious that the mayor has crossed that line by advocating for a business venture that he appears to have a financial interest in.

As a member of the Advisory Planning Commission, I take exception to the statement that “our town planner has come up with a whole bunch of stuff that he wants to change”. I believe that M. Van Hemert is merely following the sanctions detailed in the Official Town Plan as put forward by the Advisory Planning Commission and approved by town council.

The Official Town Plan attempts to ensure requirements for development within the town boundaries are clear and transparent to anyone wanting to develop or renovate a commercial or residential property in Lake Cowichan. My suggestion to the mayor and the developer would be to request a copy of the Official Town Plan to review. If the developer has concerns concerning the town planning requirements, he is free to bring those concerns along with his plans and application to the town council to discuss possible deviancies or compromises that may be made within the Official Town Plan.

I can categorically state that any individual or business wanting to build in Lake Cowichan that follows the Official Town Plan will be greeted with enthusiasm. I am unaware of any official or citizen who “… has been making it difficult for months and months for another business to start up in this town”.

The development rules are apparent and apply to all potential development. The mayor should be aware of this and I believe he owes Mr. Van Hemert a public apology for implying his motives are anything other than following town policy.
