Maintenance of creek banks looked like massacre
After the lockdown, I was so looking forward to walking on the trail underneath Old Lake Cowichan Road, following Bings Creek. The healing beauty of nature was what I needed, so it was a shock to find the banks along the trail had undergone a massacre.
Trees and undergrowth ripped, slashed and torn, as though a mad machine had gone through; never mind nesting season and the hoped for restorative quality of the walk — to see the disrespect shown felt like a true affront to nature and was upsetting to say the least. My three-year-old grandson, familiar with the area and taught to revere nature, also knew something was wrong; picking up bits of debris and asking “Why? Why?”
I would suggest that when maintenance to the trails is needed, spring is not the time, and some training and care is employed so that the area looks cared for rather than roughly attacked and clear cut. I came home in greater distress than when I had left! Please let me know if this is on your agenda for discussion.
