Local governments must limit sprawl to address climate change

Re: “CVRD recognized for climate change efforts”, (Citizen, Sept. 4)

It’s great that the CVRD is taking steps to reduce the emissions in its internal operations, but this represents only a tiny fraction of the Valley-wide emissions it has influence over. In fact, our overall emissions continue to rise partly because our local governments in Cowichan continue to make our transportation emissions worse by approving more car-dependent development.

There are several measures the CVRD and local governments need to implement to take the climate crisis seriously, from ending sprawl to fostering walkable, bikeable communities, to investing in public transit. Only then can we say we are actually addressing emissions.
