Liberal progressive paradigm the new McCarthyism

Joe is back! By this I mean that we are seeing a return to the style of rhetoric and intent exemplified by the 1950s junior senator from Wisconsin, Joe McCarthy. For those who don’t immediately recognize the name, McCarthy headed the infamous witch hunt for subversives and communists during the 50s, a movement that destroyed the lives of thousands of innocent Americans.

Now we have a 21st century version of that movement blossoming in front of us. If you don’t agree with the current politically correct “right think” that dominates the mainstream media and now has the backing of corporate America and our major institutions you are finished. Diverge from the liberal progressive paradigm and you could lose your job, have your television show removed, and you and your family could be threatened with violence. Witness the current campaign against J.K. Rowling and the capitulating apologies by public figures simply because they had an opinion that didn’t agree with liberal progressive orthodoxy.

How is this any different from McCarthyism? Instead of the paranoid fear of “communists under your bed” we have the paranoid hatred and fear of traditionalists, conservatives and any view that does not align with the new liberal progressive orthodoxy. Make no mistake folks, this is McCarthyism at its finest.

Edward R. Murrow and others courageously dismantled 1950s McCarthyism. Who will do it for us? This new and virulent form of fanaticism and censorship must go if we are to retain the best aspects of Canadian society. Millions of Americans capitulated to McCarthyism 65 years ago. Do we want to be like them, or do we want to defend the right to self expression that has made us a great democratic nation? In the end we will all have to answer that question as individuals. Take some time to think about this folks. Years from now you will want to be able to say that you stood for freedom and the constitutional rights of the citizen, and not that you joined with the mob that tried to crush them.
