Unfair marketing targets seniors?

With the coming of fresh corn on the cob being offered in our area markets, I was once again reminded of what may be a purposely deceptive practice by the owners of these stores. Have you been lured by the sticker price of 5/$5? When I asked a store clerk what the price of one cob was, I was told, $1 each! In yet another local chain food market I saw the same 5/$5 sign.

I asked to speak to the produce manager about this practice. I said that for a certain age demographic (me and my senior peers) signs like this usually indicated that a volume discount was being offered. Without asking, we would automatically grab for the deal. I asked if he was aware of this, but he said that the “head office” determines these signs.

Imagine my delight when I shopped this week at the Great Greens Market and saw the price of corn on the cob listed as “.99/each”! No deception; just good local corn, at a clear price. Thanks, Great Greens.
