Letter: Town Share a wonderful event

Town Share a wonderful event

We had an amazing turnout at the Neighbour to Neighbour Town Share event on Jan. 14 in Lake Cowichan!

The pop-up free store was a big hit and we have so many people to thank for making it all possible.

A huge thank you to everyone who came out and to those who donated so many amazing items — many of which were brand new, including the new cruiser bike that we were able to raffle off, as well as the soup donation from Mitchell’s Soup Company and the volunteer from Cowichan Lake Community Services who made the chili lunch!

Thank you to the Lake Cowichan Fire Department for the Fire Smart info and giveaways, the Lake Cowichan Community Preparedness Team and everyone who helped to promote and spread the word including the article in the Lake Cowichan Gazette.

Every event needs the right venue and we were so lucky to have been able to host this one at the Lake Cowichan 50+ Activity Centre. Al and Janene and so many members at the centre were beyond welcoming about us taking over the space with the incredible amount of donations received by the community. They got right to work organizing everything into categories, folded hundreds of items of clothing, donated items of their own, served the lunch, kept the refreshments going, helped clean up when it was all done and so much more.

This would not have been possible without them and we are extraordinarily grateful. As a thank you to Janene, Al and all of the volunteers we were able to gift a dogwood tree to be planted by the town on the outside grounds. We look forward to it flowering every spring.

Needless to say, if you’re ever looking for a venue — we highly recommend the centre!

This event is one of the many actions happening as part of the Movin’ On Up Cowichan Lake Poverty Reduction project with the Town of Lake Cowichan, hosted by local members of the Working Group. Each member is very thoughtful about serving the community in the best way possible and it really shows. Check out https://www.movinonupcowichanlake.ca/ for more info about the project!

This was the first event we could host in-person and we are thrilled it all went so well.

Please stay tuned for the next one coming up on April 15!
