How does someone get a $232,000 a year job?

I understand that the CAO (Chief Administrative Officer) of the CVRD recently retired and that the CVRD Board is now in the process of hiring a replacement.

According to the 2021 Statement of Financial Information, the retiring CAO was paid $232,000.00 which is more money than most high level Provincial or Federal employees earn.

Whether or not you believe that a good job has been done in the past few years or not is irrelevant. The key question now is, what kind of leader do we need for the future of the CVRD? How can this new person improve on the legacy, and most importantly, how do we ensure that we attract the most qualified candidates for the position?

It would seem that a person running a MEGA MILLION DOLLAR organization…. yes, that is correct, would need broad and extensive experience, an excellent formal education in management and leadership, and bring new ideas to manage the challenges and opportunities of running the Cowichan Valley Regional District.

How will the new CAO be short listed and selected? These are important questions for all of the people of the Cowichan Valley Regional District.

The CVRD Board should also have a vision for the needs of the organization, and also an understanding of the qualities and attributes required for the new person to run and manage staff and contractors, along with over 160 separate functions, and 25 departments. It would be appropriate for the CVRD Board to attract numerous people from outside of the current CVRD and have a selection panel made up of experienced senior executives, HR professionals and CVRD Board members to ensure that there is a broad base of expertise and professional backgrounds with which to choose the right candidate.

We need to attract the best talented candidates and select the best person to be the next CAO. Are we doing this?
