Biodivesity Plan for North Cowichan the right move

Dear mayor and councillors:

I heartily applaud council’s recent decision approving a municipal Biodiversity Protection Plan (BPP).

Expenditures on consultants will be money very well spent, in my opinion.

Our BPP will dovetail perfectly with our climate-action plan, forthcoming preservation of our our vital municipal forest reserve, cogent environmental bylaws and much more as our community moves into smart planning under the review and revision of our official community plan.

The BPP will identify threatened, crucial natural areas to be preserved while North Cowichan shifts to eco-based smart growth considering defined water volumes, wildfire inhibition, food sources, services, wildlife habitat, lifestyles, farmland, cultural values and more.

Without defining biodiversities in our municipality — such as our Douglas-fir ecosystem — and indeed across our Cowichan region, growth will sadly continue in a will-nilly, precarious patchwork of sprawl devaluing properties, and degrading our precious ecological heritage.

Yours in smart eco-growth,

Peter W. Rusland
