Keep cats indoors

Re: “Dogs almost kill cat”, (Citizen, Dec. 3)

Isn’t it amazing that the cat owner has no problem with her cat running loose at night but dogs have to be penned up. She should not blame the dogs, but her cat sitter. He should never have left the cat outside where is exposed to cars, cougars and other hazards. In addition, a cat is only a ‘house cat’ when it is in a house. As soon as it is outside, it becomes feral and hunts and kills native species. Each year, free-roaming cats kill an estimated 1.3 to four billion birds and 6.3 to 22.3 billion mammals in the U.S. and an estimated 100 to 350 million birds in Canada. In addition, cats use flowerbeds, vegetable gardens and kids’ sandy play areas as a toilet causing a nuisance and a health hazard. Do yourself, your neighbours and your cat a favour and keep it indoors all the time.
