‘Holiday’ instead of ‘Christmas’ is annoying

I am sorry to have to say I am sort of happy that Christmas is over for this year. Now don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy all the traditions and festivities of this celebration and the many social aspects that go with it, but I am getting more irritated every year by seeing the word “holiday” used instead of the specific and non-generic “Christmas”.

Why there is such a reluctance now to use the correct title of this day I don’t really understand, but I suspect it may have something to do with some ill-conceived politically correct (another annoying phrase) idea about offending non-Christians. I myself am not a Christian and while I don’t celebrate Christmas from a religious point of view I have always thought this was a colourful and sociable time with many good traditions.

This year I have actually seen the phrases “holiday gifts” (i.e. Christmas presents) and “holiday shopping” used. I mean, really?

This trend is becoming more ridiculous every year. I personally have avoided shopping at any retailer who advertises using the h-word, but my options seem to be fewer with every year. I wonder how many people feel as I do about this annoying trend.
