Federal NDP stuck on the fence
LNG Canada is a massive and massively subsidized fossil fuel giveaway that will lock B.C. into 30 years of hydro-fracturing the crap out of Northeast B.C. We are talking about potentially 1,000 wells per year, or 30,000 wells for the life of the project. At the end of the project, many of those 30,000 wells will be added to the tens of thousands of existing leaking, abandoned “orphan” wells already in existence in B.C. and Alberta, with the responsibility for properly sealing them falling to the province, and ultimately the taxpayers. Currently in Alberta the estimated cost of closing all of the “no longer producing” oil and gas wells is over $8 billion, while the industry funded reserves to deal with the problem are only a tiny fraction of that.
Thirty years or more of fracking and subsidizing to export millions of tonnes of methane to be burned for foreign profits seems absurd in the face of a global climate emergency. So why is it so hard for Jagmeet Singh to simply state his position on the project?
This past Sunday on Cross Country Checkup, Singh was asked to answer with a simple yes or no, to the question “Do you support the LNG Canada project in B.C.?” As has been the case with every other time he is faced with the same question he danced all around, but refused to answer it.
If you want consistent strong opposition to new fossil fuel export projects either in provincial or federal politics, please vote for the party that will stand firmly for your children’s climate future every single time; and spare you the endless waffling. Not sure which party that is? With all due respect for our local MP, the party to choose does not start with the letter “N”.
