Family members bullied out of town for being minority

What a shame that in this beautiful valley where all of us live, love, work, and above all, celebrate our wonderful diversity, there are some who do not appreciate that we are all members of the same big family and deserve basic respect.

Recently, two members of my immediate family who are determined by society to belong to a non-native minority, were repeatedly attacked verbally, called horrible names, accused falsely of terrible acts, and threatened in a violent manner, so much so that they were forced to relocate. The heartbreaking thing was that the people responsible engaged their children in harassment of my family.

Fellow citizens, all of us could benefit from examining and reflecting on our perceptions and attitudes and adjusting them as necessary.

It is not OK to call people gross names because they don’t believe as you do.

It is not OK to be violent to others.

It’s not OK to take a sharp object and mark a line on the entire length of someone’s vehicle because they think you’re different.

We all have a right to live here. Let us learn to live in peace.
