CVRD director pay raise idea absurd
Absolutely outrageous times! I am so pleased with our federal response to the pandemic as well as our provincial representatives! I feel that they truly represent what I am about and are responding as well as can be expected to this tragedy, even though I didn’t vote for them. By comparison, have you been watching what’s going on down south? Tragic!
I have to bring up something locally however, that I am not in favour of and find disgraceful; CVRD representatives voting themselves a $11,000-plus per year increase effective immediately. They attempted to squeeze it through quietly just recently but thankfully a few got it postponed for 30 days. I was encouraged that at least some were “hesitant “.
I have served on boards and this is not how it is done. I do not take issue with the amount or whether it is deserved. An ethical board, “at arms length”, always passes pay increases forward to the next board!
Forget about how the rest of us are out of work and can’t pay our bills; forget how food banks are struggling and the “hysteria” around hoarding. If anyone is underpaid and deserves an increase immediately, it’s our healthcare workers! It’s too bad that long time representatives, like Ian Morrison, who pushes for his business friends’ development projects without environmental concerns, has been there so long, it’s about the money now, not the public service. His argument is they’ve spent over a year discussng it, therefore they should pass it. It’s too bad he spent all that time on self service instead of community service. Maybe it’s time to step down if you feel your pay just isn’t worth it.
Aaron Stone’s arguments fall lame, as well. We’re in a pandemic, damn it! Things are different now. This feels so close to the absurd politics from down south, it scares me.
If you have any feelings around this issue, please let your representatives hear your voices. Don’t let them postpone until October or whenever. Hold them accountable to their vote. We’re all just sitting at home anyways, right? Maybe you can find the time between caring for your family and community. Thank you.
