City should stop wasting water on grass
Every day I walk past the train station on Canada Avenue in Duncan and most days I see the sprinklers are wasting water on the grass along the train tracks. At the same time, the Cowichan Valley is in a severe drought and the water levels on Cowichan Lake will drop below the weir on Aug. 17 (unless we have rain). A climate emergency is gripping our region and the world and clean, potable drinking water is the most precious resource we have on this planet.
I strongly urge the mayor and city council to stop wasting clean, potable water by watering grass for purely aesthetic reasons (using non-potable grey or reclaimed water is fine). Brown grass is just fine during the summer, there is no need to water the grass by the train station or anywhere else.
Wasting water on grass sends a message to residents that they can do the same on their lawns, which is completely contrary to the guidelines being issued to conserve water by the city, the CVRD and others. Please stop wasting water on grass!
