Christmas donations great, but remember the hungry all year
Christmas is all around us and the good people of our beautiful Valley are stepping up and opening their hearts and wallets to help those less fortunate.
It warms one’s heart to see the pictures of loads of food and toys being collected by companies and organizations big and small and a big thank you to them, we couldn’t do without them.
But may I take this opportunity to say a big heartfelt thank you to the people we never see and often don’t even know they exist, the people who make sandwiches and buy fruit and hard boil eggs for the Sunday lunch. If you go along Trunk Road on a Sunday around 2 p.m. you will see our hungry lining up for this gift of love made by ordinary working people giving of their precious time and often small wages to help others, and then the food bank workers who are there all year around, and the fruit harvesters picking unwanted fruit for the hungry — I could go on, but you get my drift.
If only we could remember the Christmas message all year, even in hot summer days when people are swimming or boating or on holidays in some nice cottage. The hungry are still there. Wasn’t it that little baby whose birthday we celebrate who said when he grew up “the poor you will have with you always”.
Thank you to all you good people for caring now and I pray you will be like the lunch people and remember the needy all year and whatever your beliefs, let me say like tiny Tim, “God bless us everyone” and thank you for caring.
