Bare arms cartoon uncalled for
The cartoon in the Friday, April 12 Citizen was completely uncalled for and I am surprised that your newspaper published it. To state that male politicians and government workers view a woman in a sleeveless top as naked is insulting. The whole issue was about presenting a professional image.
Male politicians and government workers have to wear a shirt and tie and a suit. There would be serious repercussions if they all showed up in sleeveless tops sans jacket. All that was being said was that women should also have to dress professionally. And sleeveless tops really are not professional attire. Has anyone never heard of a blazer? Male politicians, businessmen and media all have to wear shirt, tie and suit. Whether we like it or not, it is the current notion of a professional look. It’s no wonder we women keep hitting the glass ceiling if having bare arms at work is the overriding issue.
I was in the military for 25-plus years and my uniform was identical to my male counterparts. We all presented a professional appearance regardless of gender. Sleeveless frocks were for social occasions. And they still are in my opinion.
It’s ironic that our own MLA took up the bare arms banner. The photo that I saw of her with several other women showed one of them in a tank top with her tattoos on display. Certainly nothing professional about that look.
