It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Shirley Halliday, a long time resident of Lake Cowichan, B.C., in her home at the age of 79, on January 3, 2010.

Shirley was predeceased by: her husband Hubert “Herb” Halliday, her parents Margaret and Thomas Ushaw, sister Marjorie (Waska), and brother Len. She is survived by: daughter Debra (Brian) Britton, son Trevor (Swedini) Halliday, daughter Tracey (Gary Morlock) Halliday, grandson Matthew (Leanna) Britton, granddaughter Shayla (Barry) Vandermey, great-grandsons Cameron, Gavin, and Keaton Vandermey, great-granddaughters Danika and Kaelin Britton and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Shirley was born in Fort Langley, B.C. on August 29, 1930. It was there that she met and married Herb and they moved to Lake Cowichan in 1955. They raised their family there and were very active in their community. Shirley was particularly involved with the United Church at that time. Shirley and Herb gained many friends with their involvement in social activities and community projects. Shirley’s family was most important to her and she cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, known to them as “Great”. In her last years, she especially enjoyed the comfort of her home, caring for her flowers, and getting out for weekly errands and tea with friends.

The family wishes to express very special thanks to all the many friends and neighbours who helped and supported Shirley over the last few years after Herb’s passing. We are extremely grateful for your kindness and support. A Memorial Service and Tea was held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at the Lake Cowichan United Church, 10 N. King George Street, Lake Cowichan. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made in Shirley’s name to either the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C., P.O. Box 73, Duncan, B.C. V9L 3X1 or the Canadian Paraplegic Association, Vancouver Island South, 940 View Street, Victoria, B.C. V8V 3L5. Online condolences may be offered at www.sandsfuneral.com.
