Hofmeister, Mary Margaret (nee Cochrane)- suddenly, at home in Lake Cowichan, BC, May 9, 2003, age 54. Beloved wife of Helmut; much loved mother of Christoph Martin, Vancouver BC, and Jennifer Mary, Lake Cowichan. Dear daughter of the late Judge William Grafton and Elizabeth Cochrane, Goderich, Ontario; cherished sister of Martha Cochrane, Boston, MA and Elizabeth Cochrane, Victoria BC. Mary will be deeply missed by her aunt, Margaret Mason, Kingston Ontario, her nephew Jeffrey Gascho, Tom’s River NJ, her niece Jane Micinski, Columbus NJ, and four grand nieces; Kaytlyn, Maggie, Emily and Sarah; by her mother-in-law Elvira Hofmeister, brother-in-law Werner Hofmeister, sister-in-law Rita Hofmeister, and their families in Germany.

Mary grew up in Exeter and Goderich Ontario, graduated from Queen’s University and received a Bachelor of Education from the University of British Columbia; she also earned a Masters degree from Gonzaga University in Spokane Washington. She taught school in British Columbia for many years, most recently at Lake Cowichan Secondary School where she taught English as a Second Language. She was president of the Ohtaki society and in 1993 spent a year in Japan with her family where she taught English to Japanese students.

Mary was loving and devoted to her

family and her wide circle of friends.

She was fiercely proud of her children, and passionate about her work and her life.

One of her great passions was music, and she was instrumental in forming the LCSS high school choir, which she directed at local performances and on excursions to Disneyland and Edmonton. She also produced and directed several musical productions for the school.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 14 at 4:00 p.m. at the Lake Cowichan Centennial Hall Community Center.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the

Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada or the

Lake Cowichan Secondary School scholarship in her name.
