Lucille Smith was born August 30, 1929 in Port Alberni, BC. In 1934, with her parents Hildur and Lars Grip, they moved to Caycuse Camp. It wasn’t long before Lucille had a sister Louise (John) and brother Bill (Joy). The family then moved to Youbou, BC.

Lucille went on to get her teaching degree and returned to Youbou where she taught until she retired in 1994.

In 1951, Lucille married her first husband Harold Whittingham and had three children Bob (Deb), Lisa (Vernard) and Jean-Ann (Ron). Tragically, she was widowed in 1964. In 1968, Lucille married Howard Smith and had their son Paul. Together they raised all four children on Willow Street in Youbou where the couple resided until suddenly and unexpectedly on December 8, 2009 she was taken from us.

Lucille took great joy in her Grandchildren Joel, Carrie, Rob, Alia, Stephen, Michael, Jordan, Danielle and Neil and Great Grandchildren Alex, Justin, William and Madyson.

Lucille influenced countless lives in the Cowichan Valley with her tireless endeavors of artistic creativity and community spirit. Lucille leaves behind a very large void in our family and the community.

A celebration of her life will be held Saturday December 19, 2009 at 1:00 pm in the Youbou Community Hall. To continue Lucille’s legacy of giving, in lieu of flowers, a donation to the Heart and Stroke foundation or charity of your choice.
