Larry passed away on April 3, 2017 in Cowichan District Hospital. He was born on May 8, 1947, the first son of Jack and Ethel Davis. For his first 5 years the family lived in a 2 room cabin at his grandparents’ Sunset Auto Court on the North arm of Cowichan Lake, but moved to Lake Cowichan in 1952 so Larry could start school. He spent the rest of his life in Lake Cowichan.
He began his logging career in 1963 setting chokers for the family’s Bald Mountain Logging company. He enjoyed the work and was good at it, so soon he was doing a variety of jobs in other large and small logging outfits. With no training and minimal experience he landed a falling job with Crown Zellerbach at Nitinat in 1973. Through good luck and natural ability he managed to follow a long successful career in falling without getting seriously injured right up to his retirement in 2007.
Larry was born with a sunny disposition that made him easy to be around. He also had a great sense of humour and a quick wit. He never took himself or life too seriously and didn’t mind being the butt of his own jokes. He was also a naturally generous person and few people who put the touch on him for a loan were ever disappointed. He was very proud of his sons and early on passed on to them his love of sports, the outdoors, and fishing at Port Renfrew.
Larry is survived by his wife Katharine and their two sons John (Amanda) and Michael (Katyrina), his brothers Donald (Margaret) and John, as well as a large extended family and many friends. A memorial celebration of Larry’s life will be held at a later date.
