Alma Peterson

December 23, 2005

Following a short illness, Alma passed away in her home on Friday, December 23, 2005 in the peaceful presence of her four daughters. Alma was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, sister, auntie, cousin and friend. Four daughters; Sandra Perry (Rick), Beverly Ernewein (Gordie), Donna Francis (Terry), Laurie-Dayle Sanesh (Brian) and one son, Donald Peterson (Louise), 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren will sadly miss her. Her husband, Gordon, mother and father, Betsy and Albert Swenson, two sisters Signe Swenson and Gladys Wouters and one brother, Marvin Swenson, predecease her. Her sisters, Julia Gray, Lauraine McKay, Ida Irwin and Agnes Hildebrandt survive her. Alma was born on a farm in Ordale, Saskatchewan on September 8, 1925. In 1948, shortly after her husband found employment and residence in B.C., Alma and their young daughter followed him and settled in Lake Cowichan where they lived comfortably for the remainder of her life. A loving mother and wife, she kept the home fires burning comfortably as they raised four more children. She remained active until her short illness as she maintained a yard full of fruits and flowers and spent many hours happily sitting in front of her sewing machine. The couple were founding and active members in the Lake Cowichan Pentecostal Church where they both taught Sunday school for many years, helped with Kid’s Club and youth groups. Alma’s quiet, simple life was a daily testimony of kindness, empathy and compassion. Together their willing support was evident amongst their family and others who they came in contact with. We will all remember Alma by her kind encouraging words and positive attitude. In her words, we will remember her to say, “tomorrow will be a better day”. The inseparable couple was torn apart two years ago when Gordon passed away. It has been a lonely time for mom, we rejoice that she is now reunited with her partner and our dad at last. The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Froese for his exceptional level of care and compassion to Alma and her family. Also thanks goes to the staff of Cowichan District Hospital and the caring staff of Cowichan Home Support.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, January 14th, 2006 at the Lake Cowichan Pentecostal Christian Fellowship Church, 57 King George, at 11:00 am followed by a luncheon. Interment at Mount Prevost cemetery at 3:00 PM. Mom had a great concern for her grandchild suffering from autism. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Autistic Society, specifically: Families for Early Autism Treatment.
