From Drunken Duncan to Dizzy Duncan! That’s what Deanne Garside thinks about the addition of another roundabout coming to the region.
But hey, they’re not really roundabouts are they?
“They are not Roundabouts…they are traffic circles…go to Europe and encounter roundabouts there and your nerves will be shot,” quipped Evon Smith.
Whether you love them or hate them, call them traffic circles or roundabouts, it seems most everyone has an opinion on the traffic calming/flow measure.

The chatter got going on Facebook when the Citizen posted the news that construction of the City of Duncan’s first roundabout is expected to begin this year at the intersection of Cairnsmore, Government and College Streets — just a stone’s throw away from the Municipality of North Cowichan’s roundabout at the corner of Government, Cowichan Lake Road and Gibbins Road.
“Oh great, because the one by the hospital works so well,” wrote Colin Bayley.
“Usually the light is what is holding up traffic. The new roundabout will change the flow completely!” added Lisa Mayea.
Bayley said it’s people that don’t know how to use the traffic measure properly that create backups.
“It also gets plugged up because people don’t know how to use it. Too many people either stop for nothing or speed up to beat another car instead of just driving through it properly so all directions continue to flow,” he said.
When folks weren’t commenting on the name and function of roundabouts (or traffic circles if you prefer), they were commenting on the cost.
“Couldn’t that $800,000 be put to better use?” wondered Charlene Van Koevering.
“What a waste of money,” added Patricia Kocurek.
