Volunteers needed for Cowichan Community Policing posts

You’ve read the news, you’ve seen the needles, you’ve almost been hit by a speeding car through a school zone. You’ve posted to social media about that person in a hoodie with the backpack who looks like they’re scoping out your yard.

You’ve read the news, you’ve seen the needles, you’ve almost been hit by a speeding car through a school zone. You’ve posted to social media about that person in a hoodie with the backpack who looks like they’re scoping out your yard.

But what can you do that will actually make a difference?

Carol-Ann Rolls said to consider volunteering with Cowichan Community Policing and Crime Prevention.

“We are looking and in need of volunteers to keep up with the demand for programs and services,” the community policing manager said recently.

Currently, volunteers are focusing on Business Watch, Block Watch, Speed Watch and some special projects like Bike theft prevention (Garage 529), Business/Home Safety audits and Seniors.

“Block Watch is the easiest and least time consuming program to reduce and prevent crime in neighbourhoods,” Rolls said. “We are really promoting: getting to know your neighbours, prevention tips and reporting to police.”

According to the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP’s quarterly report, there are more than 1,500 households participating in an active Block Watch program on their streets.

Business Watch is also a free program available to merchants in the community.
