A vehicle rolled over and wound up on its side facing the wrong direction along the Trans Canada Highway Monday afternoon.

The driver got out before emergency personnel arrived and did not appear to be seriously injured after the single-vehicle accident around 1 p.m. just north of the Somenos overpass near Somenos Road. The driver, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle that came to rest facing north in the southbound lanes, was charged with several Motor Vehicle Act offenses.

Cause of the accident is unknown, but impaired driving was ruled out. Road conditions were not a factor on a sunny and clear day.

North Cowichan Fire Department members from the Crofton and Chemainus halls were on the scene, as well as members of the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP in three police vehicles and BC Ambulance personnel.

Traffic was limited to one lane southbound for about an hour and a half until the accident was cleared, but there was no long back-up.
