More than 2,300 customers were in the dark Friday afternoon as winds caused trees to take out wires at multiple sites throughout the Cowichan Valley.

The biggest outage occurred at 1:56 p.m. south of Keparo Road in Mill Bay with 1,369 customers out.

Another 782 customers on the west side of Shawnigan Lake area were also also out but that’s since been restored. There are still smaller pockets out near Renfrew Road and Decca Road and another grouping across at Heald and Norbury Roads.

As of 2:20 p.m. Friday crews had been assigned to all areas within the region.

Large swaths of the Chemainus and Saltair areas were also without power as of 2:45 p.m.
