Thanks to the quick actions of passersby who stopped and called 911, firefighters were able to limit the damage caused by a blaze in a house last Saturday morning.

In fact, multiple emergency calls were placed related to a house fire at the corner of Herd and Bell McKinnon roads after the smoke and flames were spotted.

Responders from North Cowichan’s South End hall were summoned to the scene shortly before 8 a.m. on Saturday, and arrived to find flames in the roof on the back side of the house. They quickly got the fire under control. The home’s inhabitants were able to get out safely.

The fire damage was minimized, but combined with water damage, it was enough to make the house uninhabitable for the time being.

“It’s not a total loss,” South End Fire Chief Scott Henning said.

About 20 volunteer firefighters were at the scene for approximately two hours. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Onlookers at the time, however, believed the fire originated in the attic.
