A “suspicious incident” in Mill Bay on Saturday, May 8 turned out to be not so suspicious after all.
The Shawnigan Lake RCMP were able to resolve the reported incident within a few hours of posting information about it to their website a few days later.
Police received a report on May 10 that a young girl was walking alone on Whiskey Point Road in Mill Bay around 5 p.m. on May 8 when she felt that a man in a car was driving slowly and watching her.
She was scared enough to hide from the driver, who stopped the vehicle and got out. He didn’t speak to the girl, and she was able to call someone and walk home.
The police posted a description of the incident and the man and his car to their website just before 8 a.m. on May 12, and were able to sort things out satisfactorily by 2 p.m. that same day.
“The public were instrumental in quickly identifying this vehicle and the driver,” Shawnigan Lake detachment commander Sgt. Tim Desaulniers said. “That only happened because of the excellent description made by the young girl who had the wherewithal to remember so much about the incident. We have spoken with the driver and their explanation of the incident matches that of the complainant, and their reasoning for being in the area at the time makes perfect sense.”
The girl and her family were advised of the conclusion of the investigation, police said.
