Candace Spilsbury will remain School District 79 board of education chairperson for another year.
The long-time school trustee retains the position following a vote at the board’s open meeting on Nov. 5.
Barbara de Groot is the vice chair.
Spilsbury is serving her fourth four-year term as a member of the board and eighth term as its chair. She’s overseen a lot of successes, changes and improvements within the district over the years, including a refined vision for education with the appointment of the province’s first full-time District Elder and Knowledge Keeper, as well as a refocused effort to bring mental health, inclusion, and indigenous understandings into professional development, and increased childcare spaces and early learning focus.
“I’m grateful that the board has again put their trust in me to help lead our important work,” said Spilsbury said. “The completion and launching of our new strategic plan that will lay a path for educational transformation within the district. We look forward to sharing the work that will help direct the board and district for the upcoming years.”
Spilsbury also serves as the president of the Vancouver Island School Trustees Association.
