Lake Cowichan Mayor Bob Day is reminding residents that there is enough food to go around despite the transport and supply issue caused by the flooding of major shipping roadways in the Lower Mainland.

Following the heavy rain, in a situation not unique to Lake Cowichan, when the news broke that there could be delays in shipping, many rushed out to stock up, leaving the shelves empty for others.

“We experienced some panic buying of food, toilet paper and gasoline,” Day confirmed. “I am encouraging people [to] resist the urge to hoard these items as I have it on good authority that the supply lines have been re-routed or re-opened including roadways and rail lines. There will obviously be some short term delays but in the meantime, please leave some on the shelf for the next person.”

Canada Post has also issued a notice that there could be some delays with their delivery systems due to the floods but the company will try to deliver to the affected communities and regions.

“Due to adverse weather conditions including flooding, rockslides and mudslides in B.C., there are multiple road closures affecting ground transportation of mail and parcels across Western Canada. Customers may experience some delays in receiving items,” a news release issued Nov. 17 said.
