Get ready to move, North Cowichan! Staff at the Cowichan Aquatic Centre have registered the municipality in a contest called the Community Better Challenge.

The two-week challenge, hosted by participACTION, pits communities across the country against one another to see who can be more active. Activity means anything from housework to mountain climbing so everyone can take part.

“How exciting if we could be crowned Canada’s Most Active community, or a regional winner!” said the Aquatic Centre recreation programmer Jill Amy. “The national winning organization would receive $150,000, and regional winner $20,000.”

The event runs from May 31 through June 16 but Cowichan’s efforts kick off on Sunday, June 2 at the Cowichan Sportsplex. Free fitness events will take place throughout the municipality for the week of June 2-8.

“We are taking fitness outdoors into neighbourhoods in the Cowichan Valley to break down barriers,” Amy said.

But how does it work exactly?

Participants simply need to track their activity and can do so online at www.participACTION.com or by downloading the participACTION app from their device’s app store.

The app tracks and tabulates the results based on the postal code of those registered and, along with a bit of math to take into consideration the size of the communities involved, one national winner and five regional winners will be selected.

“Your minutes of activity do not have to be at the Cowichan Aquatic Centre,” Amy noted. “We will be encouraging everyone in North Cowichan to sit less, move more, and track your activity.”

Those that participate in North Cowichan’s one week of free fitness will receive a passport.

“If they attend the full week of free fitness activity they will receive one complementary pass to the Aquatic Centre,” Amy explained. “All completed cards will go into a draw for a monthly pass once the free week is completed.”
