North Cowichan is transitioning away from printed calendars for curbside collection in an effort to reduce waste and save budget resources.

North Cowichan provides recycling, garbage and organics curbside collection services.

Organics are collected every week, and recycling and garbage every two weeks on alternating weeks.

Some concerns had been raised in the municipality that residents weren’t receiving the collection calendars in the mail, as they had in the past.

Shawn Cator, North Cowichan’s director of operations, said there are several ways that residents can receive information on collections days.

They include a website calendar tool which can be found at www.northcowichan.ca/curbside, that includes many reminder options to choose from, including email, text message, phone call, and twitter, and provides the ability for residents to print their own calendar.

Cator said North Cowichan also has an app for smartphones on its curbside pick-up schedules that is available in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

“There is also an option to come to municipal hall to pick up a calendar, or call the operations department at 250-746-3106, and staff will mail out a calendar,” Cator said

“North Cowichan has an advertisement coming out in local newspapers that outlines reminder options as well.”
