RCMP are asking the public to stop spreading rumours online related to an assault on the school grounds of Alexander Elementary in the early morning hours of Jan. 27.

It was 12:20 a.m. when paramedics asked for police to attend the school’s playground area.

According to RCMP, a man sustained injuries to his face that were consistent with an assault but due to his injuries, the victim was not able to describe the suspect(s).

The man was transported to hospital for further medical treatment, police said.

“Through investigation, police believe the victim was involved in an altercation with unknown individuals on the school grounds in the hour prior to this assault,” said BC RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Chris Manseau. “There is no indication that any weapons were used in this altercation, contrary to rumors on social media. The public is asked not to perpetuate these rumors as they can interfere with the investigation.”

While rumours also circulated that the school was closed, Manseau explained that only the school’s playground had been closed the morning of Jan. 27 to allow for forensic officers to collect evidence.

“Investigators continue to speak to witnesses and gather evidence and feel that a group of youth may have been at the scene either prior to, or as the assault took place,” Manseau added.

Anyone with information or surveillance related to this incident is asked to please contact the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP at 250-746-5522.
