The Municipality of North Cowichan is beginning construction of a multi-use trail and vehicle pullout on the east boulevard of the Trans Canada Highway.
The project is being done in partnership with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.
The paved shared trail will accommodate bike and pedestrian use and will provide a connection between the McDonald’s driveway entrance and the sidewalk on Beverly Street.
The vehicle pullout will accommodate short-term parking for commercial trucks and vehicles pulling trailers who want to access services in the area.
The existing unpaved shoulder is currently being used as a pullout; however, the new paved pullout will be safer and easier to navigate.
Construction will occur Monday through Friday evenings from 7:30 p.m. to 4 a.m.
During these working hours, the right northbound lane of the Trans Canada Highway will be closed.
North Cowichan asks for your patience and cooperation during this time as there will be delays resulting from the lane closure.
During this period, there may be additional road closures around Tim Horton’s; however, the contractor will ensure that alternate access is always available.
“Construction will take approximately four to five weeks, weather permitting, and I want to thank residents and businesses for their patience,” said North Cowichan Mayor Al Siebring.
“This updated multi-use trail will provide pedestrians and bike traffic with a safer option for travelling the highway, and also a safer place for commercial truckers and people pulling trailers to access surrounding services and restaurants. I am looking forward to seeing the finished project.”
