More BC Ferries trips between Crofton and Vesuvius are on the way thanks to the reversal of service cuts made by the previous government, the province has announced.

The route is among the 10 that’ll see service restored to the level they were prior to the 2014 cuts.

“The BC Liberals’ reckless ferry cuts and overall mismanagement had a devastating impact on ferry-dependent communities, especially coastal Indigenous communities,” said Doug Routley, MLA for Nanaimo-North Cowichan. “I am proud to be part of a government that recognizes ferries as an extension of the highway system, and that is working hard to restore affordable, reliable ferry service.”

The service changes totaling 2,7000 round trips come in response to the Redlin report, a comprehensive operating review of the coastal ferry service that identified opportunities to improve services under the current model.

No extra sailings were announced for the ever-popular and thus, ever-busy Mill Bay-Brentwood Bay route, however. Last April, government improved ferry services by reducing fares on smaller and northern routes by 15 per cent, freezing fares on the major routes and reinstating the 100 per cent discount for seniors.

For years people living in coastal communities saw ferry fares increase and services cut,” said Claire Trevena, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “Quality, affordable ferry services are a necessity not a luxury for people in coastal communities. That’s why we’ve turned the ship around – first by rolling back ferry fares on small coastal routes and now by reversing cuts to services that were making it difficult for people to get around.”
