Alistair MacGregor, MP for Cowichan-Malahat-Langford, is the NDP’s new critic for food-price inflation.
NDP leader Jagmeet Singh appointed MacGregor to the position as Canadians face ever-rising prices at grocery stores. Singh’s move comes a day after grocery giant Loblaw lifted a price freeze on some products, sparking worry about food prices rising even faster in February.
“Families are being forced to cut back their grocery lists and take food out of their grocery carts, and prices are still rising fast,” said MacGregor. “While people have been coping with ridiculous food costs, grocery CEOs are making more money than ever before. It doesn’t add up.”
“Everyone should be able to afford healthy food,” said Singh.
“But right now, families are crossing items off their grocery list, or racking up bigger bills at the till, and the Liberals are letting it happen. Justin Trudeau is letting the cost of living get worse for you so profits can get bigger for CEOs. MacGregor is a champion for working families, and he’s going to fight for every tool possible to stop ‘greedflation’ so people have a more breathing room.”
Singh said that includes leading the fight for a windfall tax, because grocery giants have to be stopped from being rewarded for gouging families.
Peter Julian, MP for New Westminster-Burnaby, will take over from MacGregor as critic for public safety.
