A Lake Cowichan RCMP constable has been charged with assault.

Const. Kevan Cranmer, who has 2 1/2 years experience on the force, was charged following an interaction with a woman he had detained in an impaired driving investigation on Dec. 13.

“A criminal investigation was initiated after another RCMP member reported observing Const. Kevan Cranmer using what he believed was excessive force,” an RCMP statement read. “The female, who was not seriously injured, did not make a complaint.”

All circumstances surrounding the incident were forwarded to Crown counsel for review, and one count of assault was approved.

Cranmer is currently on active duty in Lake Cowichan, and is scheduled to appear in Duncan court on July 26.

A separate, internal code of conduct investigation into the incident is ongoing.
