The Lake Cowichan Food Bank is looking for a new home.
Katherine Worsley, treasurer for the Lake Cowichan Food Bank Society, said the group recently received a letter from the landlord of the food bank’s current location at Suite 105-205 South Shore Rd. that their long-term lease, which ends on March 31, will not be renewed.
She said that as of the end of March, the food bank can only lease its site, which it has occupied since 2016, on a month-by-month basis.
Worsley said the landlord is switching to a month-to-month lease because a business in the building is looking to expand into the space the food bank occupies in the near future.
“We can’t operate under a month-to-month lease due to the type of services we provide in the community,” she said.
“It seems like about every five years, something like this happens. We knew something like this could happen, and we have been looking for another location, but not as diligently and aggressively as we should have. We’ve been walking on eggshells for some time, and our eggs just cracked.”
Worsley said the society is looking for another location in Lake Cowichan that would have to be a minimum of 1,500 sq. ft.
“We can pay rent, but not an exorbitant amount, and we’re hoping someone would step forward and donate some space for us,” she said.
“We have had fundraisers in preparation for this, but we don’t have enough to pay a high rent.”
