Johanne Kemmler is running for re-election as a trustee in the Cowichan Valley school district.

Kemmler, who has served one term on the board of education, said she has lived and raised her family in the Cowichan Valley and her children attended district schools, as well as her grandchildren who are currently in the school system.

“I spent the majority of my working years in schools and, during this time, I realized how important our public-education system is,” she said.

“Our children spend a great deal of time in our schools so it is imperative that they are safe and welcoming spaces.”

Kemmler said she believes every child should have an equitable, adaptive, future-focused education.

She said she is committed to education happening in a positive, caring, inclusive environment; informed, heard and respected students, educators, families and partner groups; Truth and Reconciliation; mental health initiatives; every student graduating at their full potential; and inclusion, harmony, environment and community.

“I have served on the board for the past four years in various committees including vice-chair of the board, chair of advisory committee, vice-chair of the education and business standing committee, audit committee and early childhood committee,” Kemmler said.

“I have also served on the executive of CUPE Local 5101 (support staff) for six years, and I have more than 25 years experience in the district as an administrative secretary working in schools with families, students and staff.”

She is part of the Students First Team.

The Students First Team shares a commitment to working together to create an environment where children can be their best selves, realizing skills and a love of learning that benefits them for life. Members of the team look at decisions with a students first lens. Each member of the Students First Team brings their own opinions to the table and are committed to reaching values-based decisions through civil, thoughtful discussion.

Team members are Elizabeth Croft, Johanne Kemmler, Cindy Lise, Jennifer Strachen and Joe Thorne.
